This comprehensive encyclopedia provides personal and professional background on 444 American and Canadian naturalists, explorers, conservationists, ecologists, environmentalists, scientists, writers, and artists from the late 19th century through the present. The editors are professional historians and professors who have placed each subject within the framework of the evolution of environmental science, from early exploration to current government regulation. Concise, clear, and unbiased, the entries average two pages and very clearly outline biographical information, professional and career accomplishments, and major contributions. The entries can be used by reasders of all ages. For each entry, a bibliography of both published and unpublished sources is included that could even be used for advanced research. A useful appendix lists all entrants by category (e.g., botanists, educators, topographers), and an additional bibliography lists many more collective biographies and serials. There are no comparable reference books on this topic that have the scope of this dictionary. Worth every penny, it is one of the best reference books of the year despite being unillustrated. Highly recommended for most public and academic libraries.?Laura Lipton, Univ. of Washington Lib., Seattle

When European explorers began investigating the North American continent in the late fifteenth century, very little was known about the area. This new dictionary, compiled by editors with expertise in the science, history, social-science, humanities, and English subject areas, contains professional and personal information about a representative selection of the many American and Canadian environmentalists and naturalists who, over the next 500 years, by their individual and varied activities, contributed in a profound way to the present body of environmental knowledge about the U.S. and Canada. By widely defining the naturalist and environmentalist categories, the editors have been able to include diverse subjects such as explorers who published results of their natural-history and mapping studies and biologists, botanists, historians, geographers, geologists, ecologists, ornithologists, conservationists, wildlife-management specialists, zoologists, park planners, military personnel, political figures, and writers and artists who have contributed to or influenced current environmental awareness. Among them are professionals and amateurs, academics and laypersons. Many are well known, but others are not, in spite of their achievements.

Organized alphabetically by name, each entry contains biographical information, including family background, education, career, positions held and awards, and details about major contributions in each individual's respective field(s) of activity. Up-to-date bibliographies of published works and, where applicable, sources of unpublished material are given. A useful appendix lists the entries by occupation or field of activity. Individuals may be listed in up to three fields, although some made contributions in four or more. Countries of origin and whether the subject had any formal academic training are noted. The editors have included a selective bibliography where additional information may be found. A similar resource, The Environmentalists: A Biographical Dictionary from the 17th Century to the Present, cites its subjects' affiliations and organizations and notes who may have caused environmental damage but does not cover as broad a time period.

Thomas Harriot, 1560^-1621, one of the earliest entrants, helped Sir Walter Raleigh with his seagoing navigations and, as a mathematician, developed the greater than () and less than (bols. Ansel Adams, 1902^-84, one of the most recent entrants, was a photographic artist who raised environmental awareness through the quality of his slides. Between these entrants are found a group of men and women whose dedication, quest for knowledge and, in many cases, unconcern for their own well-being are reflected in the details of their biographies. Subjects also include writers--from academics to newspapermen--educators, medical practitioners, lawyers, inventors, and deep-sea divers, fur trappers, and more. Their life stories provide fascinating reading as well as a rich source of social, economic, and political research material for students in all of these subject areas. Recommended for university, high-school and public libraries.
